Mark Cuban: I'd be Donald Trump's VP on one condition; on his future in
politics
Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban joined The Musers on KTCK-AM 1310 The
Ticket recently to talk basketball, politics and some other topics. Here are
some highlights:
Question: Donald Trump is making headlines in his quest to become the
Republican nominee. Do you think he can actually become the nominee?
Mark Cuban: "It's still too early to tell because so much can happen over the
next however many months. I don't even know when the convention is, August or
July or whatever. So it's too early to tell. Is there a chance? Yes. Is it
better than a 50-50 chance? Yes."
Question: What kind of president do you think he would make?
Mark Cuban: "Completely unlike anything you see and hear right now. That's my
sense. I think it's the whole, 'Don't hate the player, hate the game' and
he's playing the game. I don't necessarily think he believes everything he
says. I think if you look at his business history he's been far more
pragmatic than he's showing. Now every Republican candidate, Democratic too,
talks in absolutes. 'We'll build a wall. We won't let anybody in. We'll do A,
B and C.' You almost have to, right? If you don't conform to what a
conservative Republican is, you don't have a chance in the primaries. Now
will he govern like that? I don't think so."
Question: You think he's playing the game now, but you also think he's
qualified and he'd do a decent job running the country?
Mark Cuban: "I think he'd be pragmatic. Who knows, right? Do I think he's as
qualified as any of the other Republican candidates? Yes. I'm not one to
believe that if you're a one or two-term Senator that really makes you any
more qualified or if you're a two-term governor that makes you any more
qualified. Running this country is not easy no matter what and you just hope
somebody has enough brain power to figure it out. I think that's why [Barack]
Obama, for all of his mistakes, has done a lot of good things because the guy
is smart. I think Trump is smart. I think a couple of the other candidates, I
don't think any of them are dumb. Some of them are so dogmatic. I think
that's the one thing you can't be. As President of the Unites States, you
don't know where the next problem is coming from. You don't know what all the
facts are going to be. You have to be smart. You have to be able to process
information. You have to have some leadership skills. The one thing you can
not be is dogmatic. And I think that's what's haunting both sides [during]
this primary season. Everybody is trying to show that they're more dogmatic
than the next guy, except for Trump. Even he has his moments with the wall
and immigration. But with everything else, him and maybe [John] Kasich are
the least dogmatic."
John Kasich
Question: Seeing what he's gone through, does it make it more or less likely
that you'd pursue something political?
Mark Cuban: "It would seem like it would be more fun. But as long as I have
young kids, that's the difference. My wife, she gets asked all the time too
and she's like, 'Don't even think about it. Don't even think about it.' And
when the boss of the household says no, you gotta listen."
Question: But this is something that interests you, right?
Mark Cuban: "It's interesting to me. It really, really is. Just not now. Just
not this time around. But it's certainly crossed my mind. How would I react,
what would I say, what would I do, how would I approach things? I think
everybody thinks like that too, right? 'These guys are idiots.' 'I'd do it a
different way.' 'I would say this.' 'My ideas are better.' But I truly
believe my ideas are better."
Question: So if he picked up the phone and asked you to be his vice
president, would you do it?
Mark Cuban: "As long as he said he's listen to me in everything I said we'd
be okay."
Question: What's your relationship with him been like?
Mark Cuban: "Over the years we've been back and forth. We've talked on the
phone and we always respect each other. 'You're a killer, Mark. You get it.'
And this and that. He knows that I can pick on him and I'm not going to back
down. And I know he'd pick on me and it won't have any effect on me at all.
It's all fun. ... He's very competitive, like I am. He doesn't mind banging
heads. And then you go onto the next thing. It's like in the NBA or NFL after
the game they'll shake hands after they just killed each other. I think
there's a lot of that to him. He's just very competitive. You can see it. You
saw it in the last debate, that competitive side took over. 'You're a liar'
and this and that. Now I happen to believe that about Ted Cruz, but that's a
different issue."
Ted Cruz
Question: What's the story about the first time you met him?
Mark Cuban: "We were in a Super Bowl party at Mar-a-Lago, his estate in
Florida, and I was there with Jerry Yang...and the guy who was CEO of Bank of
America at the time. We were at a party and he came down doing the meet and
greet thing just walking around. We were down by the pool. There was a
veranda up at Mar-a-Lago where there were tables and a there was a club-type
thing going on. He said, 'Some day you'll be up there with the rich people.'
And he denies that. After he found out that maybe that wasn't quite true, he
invited me to his office. We sat and talked. But the best part about that,
walking there the first time, every inch of every wall is covered with
pictures of him. Which is great."
Question: You think he'll do that on the wall that he builds?
Mark Cuban: You know what? That is the best idea yet. That'll keep people in
Mexico for sure.
