Rohingya refugee Mohammad Omeer, 18-months-old, is administered a vaccination
against cholera, at a vaccination site run by the Bangladesh Ministry of
Health, during a massive Oral Cholera Vaccine (OCV) campaign targeting
Rohingya refugees and local Bangladeshi residents, in Balukhali camp, Cox's
Bazaar, Bangladesh, Tuesday 8 May 2018.
A UNICEF-supported Oral Cholera Vaccine (OCV) campaign is taking place in Cox
’s Bazar from 6-13 May 2018, targeting nearly one million Rohingya and
Bangladeshi people.
This is a second cholera vaccination campaign targeting Rohingya refugees and
the surrounding Bangladeshi host communities.
Approximately 900,000 doses of oral cholera vaccine were administered to the
vulnerable population, in two phases from October to November 2017.
Approximately 250 vaccination teams are being deployed to vaccinate all
people over the age of one year.
The week-long campaign is led by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare,
with support of World Health Organization, UNICEF and other partners.
Since an outbreak of violence began on 25 August 2017, approximately two
thirds of a million Rohingya people have sought refuge in neighboring
Bangladesh.
More than half of them are children.
UNICEF and partners are working to provide for the needs of this enormous
refugee population who will be all the more vulnerable during the upcoming
rainy season.
