在上課過程中，大家常會聽到顧問們說「不要陷進語意、不要全盤翻譯、不要全部看懂」
，導致同學常會覺得莫名其妙，心中想說：我不看懂到底怎麼作答？
為了讓同學更了解，這篇文章會給同學兩個概念，我們用「心態」跟「題目」來讓同學理
解托福的本質。
1. 為什麼「不要陷進語意、不要全盤翻譯、不要全部看懂?」
托福閱讀跟聽力非常類似，都在考同學「短時間理解大量資訊」，其中的關鍵，就是「短
時間。」因此托福閱讀一篇文章只有18分鐘讓你做答，相信同學慢慢做，一定都可以做的
很好，但是只給你18分鐘，就有難度，也就是不太可能有時間看完全部的細節。所以重點
是，時間這麼短之下，我到底要「看懂」什麼。
其實，就是用skim的方式，去抓「訊息的功能、文章的脈絡」這兩件事。同學想想看你常
常閱讀段落時，是否會花很多時間去沉思example的語意，想把它翻譯看懂，並且讀完之
後腦袋已經進入渙散的狀態了。因此，與其去思考語意，不如去思考這串細節要幹嘛？是
要扣回什麼概念？拉回文眼嗎？還是反駁上個段落的訊息呢？要不斷問自己，訊息的作用
，你才有可能看這篇文章的脈絡。
2. 如果常常對訊息的作用無法釐清，先訓練自己做托福的「功能目的題」
此題型設計的目的，就是讓你是否清楚知道訊息的作用，考你訊息的目的，常見的題目像
是：
Why does the author mention X?
Why does the author compare … to …?
Why does the author use the word … in discussing…?
The author discusses X in paragraph X in order to…
因此，要學會去找出這串訊息的作用，我們來看一個例子(大家先停下來做做看)：
文章：One of the most puzzling aspects of the Lascauxis paintings their lo
cation. Other rockpaintings，for example, those of Bushmen in South Africa are
either located near caveentrances or completely in the open. Cave paintings (
Lascauxis) in France and Spain, however, are inrecesses and caverns far remove
d from original cave entrances.
Q. Why does the author mention Bushmen in South Africa in paragraph 2?
A. To suggest that ancient artists from all over the world painted animals on
rocks
B. To contrast the location of their rock paintings to those found at Lascaux
C. To support the claim that early artists worked in cramped spaces
D. To give an example of other artists who painted in hidden locations
首先分析問題題目，找出其中的關鍵字：Bushmen in South Africa。之後回到原文看其
前後的句子，找到原文的 for example，我就可以了解到，這例子的目的是為了說明它前
面的那句話：「這些繪畫所在的location 令人困惑」
