Serena Williams Is Staying In A Rental Home for The US Open Due To Lung Issues
Serena Williams is in New York for the next several weeks as she pursues her
record-tying 24th Grand Slam, but she won't be living in one of the two Long
Island tournament hotels like many of the other players at the U.S. Open.
Instead, Williams has rented a private home in order to take precautions
because of her health issues.
"I want to be here, but I have genuine health issues," Williams, 38, said
Friday on a Zoom call ahead of the Western & Southern Open, the U.S. Open
warmup tournament in New York.
"I didn't want to be in the [official player] hotel because I have lung
issues and felt it was a big risk for me personally. In a house, I can
control more, there's no housekeeping [staff], none of that stuff. I needed
to put my mind at rest so that I could perform in New York."
Williams has pre-existing health issues because she battled blood clots and
life-threatening pulmonary embolisms while giving birth to her daughter
Olympia in September 2017. Olympia will turn 3 during this year's Open,
where Serena is attempting to tie Margaret Court with her 24th Grand Slam
title.
Novak Djokovic, who, like Williams, is favored to win the Open, is also
staying in a rental home. Djokovic and his wife Jelena contracted Covid in
June, but both are now free of the virus.
"With the trees and serenity, being in this kind of environment is a
blessing," Djokovic told The New York Times on a Zoom call. "And I'm
grateful, because I've seen the hotel where the majority of players are
staying. I don't want to sound arrogant or anything like that, and I know
the U.S.T.A. did their best in order to provide accommodation and organize
everything and organize these bubbles so the players can actually compete and
come here, but it's tough for most of the players, not being able to open
their window and being in a hotel in a small room."
He added Friday on a Zoom call: "Every player had an opportunity to make
that investment...it's completely up to the individual." He added: "It's d
finitely a luxury, and I'm grateful."
Still, privates homes aren't for everyone.
Andy Murray, who won his first major at the U.S. Open in 2012 and has career
earnings of $61 million, said the cost of a rented home was "astronomical."
The USTA gave players the option of having a private home, but they must also
pay for round-the-clock security make sure family or entourage members don't
take unnecessary risks.
"They have to guide you, make sure people aren't leaving, going to nightclubs
and restaurants," Williams said. "I think that's good, because people might
get antsy and might want to go places. I want to know where people are going.
I want to make sure we are all keeping ourselves in this giant bubble. There
are more people now, with 128 draws. That's a lot of people, so I like to
know that everybody is staying to their word and being honest about it."
Serena announced on June 17 that she would play the U.S. Open, but admitted
she had concerns that the two New York tournaments would even happen.
More than 176,000 Americans have so far died from the pandemic.
"There was definitely a point where, in the beginning, I was, like, 'There
is no way these tournaments can even happen,'" she said. "But I had a lot
of great talks with several people at the USTA and the protocols they have
are so intense, it definitely helps me to feel safe. I see every day they are
following through on those protocols."
"Obviously, it goes bigger than the USTA. The government has to be involved
and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention at some level, so that
also makes me feel a lot better." As for the Open itself, only four of the
Top-10 women in the world are playing the event, with notables like world
No. 1 Ash Barty, No. 2 Simona Halep and No. 6 Bianca Andreescu, who beat
Serena in last year's final, opting to skip it.
Still, Serena doesn't feel that cheapens the ladies' draw or would lessen
the significance of a title.
"It still has to be tennis that's played, asterisks or not," Williams said.
"I think this whole year deserves an asterisk, because it's such a special
year, history we have never been through in this world, to be honest, not
this generation, not this lifetime. It's just in history, period."
"So I think we are living a future history lesson. So I think regardless,
there is always going to be some asterisk by it, because it's never been
done before. And if you win, it was, like, wow, I was able to win in this
crazy circumstance where there was no fans. It was just so sterile and weird
but I mentally came through. It might be a more mental test than anything.”
