You have made an old man I met very happy. To give u the background: I met a
man staying in Sai buri in south Thailand. It is an area where now Muslims
and Thai are fighting. Anyway, there is a quite big community there of
Chinese. They observe many Chinese traditions but have little knowledge of
the reasons.
For example, they have very strong taoist practises. They will also respect
qing Ming, etc.
Their temples are still dated according to the nationalist government year. I
saw one that even translates to the 1980s.
Anyway, all he knows is that his father passed away when he was 3. Doesn't
know his fathers name. He only knows his surname is gan. And his name is

My knowledge of Chinese is just very functional, I hae no knowledge of formal

left. I thought mainland Chinese usually had names with 1 character. Anyway,
now we all learn.
