〈英吉利國所用立錢糧〉中，為其祖國創建了一個全新的漢譯：
「大英國」。

1.麥都思將「英吉利國（England）」視為「大英國」的對稱。
2.除了「以耳蘭得」和「士各蘭得」，「英吉利」同時又是「大英國」的組成部分。換
言之，「大英國」亦即 Great Britain。
南京條約
《南京條約》的翻譯工作由英方人員擔任，由於清政府缺乏通曉英語的外交官員，所以主
要的翻譯都是由英國的外交官馬儒翰、郭士立和羅伯聃負責。
條約第二條的中文譯文為：
自今以後，大皇帝恩准大英國人民帶同所屬家眷寄居大清沿海之廣州、福州、廈門、寧波
、上海五處港口，貿易通商無礙。且大英君主派設領事、管事領官住該五處城邑，專理商
賈事宜……
英文版本為：
His Majesty the Emperor of China agrees, that British Subjects,with their
families and establishments, shall be allowed to reside, for the purpose of
carrying on their mercantile pursuits, without molestation of restraint at
the Cities and Towns of Canton, Amoy, Foochow-Fu, Ning-po and Shanghai, and
Her Majesty the Queen of Great Britain, etc.,will appoint
Superintendents,Consular Officers,to reside at each of the above-named Cities
and Towns.
