The Stig needs to find a new place to race.
Top Gear needs to find a new test track and studio because the show’s
current home at the Dunsfold Aerodrome is about to become a large housing
development. The local Waverley Borough Council voted ten to eight to
allow the construction, according to BBC News.
The Dunsfold Park development will include 1,800 homes, including some
affordable housing. There will also be shopping, parks, places to play
sports, and a health center. The builders will also improve nearby roads
and will provide a bus service. It’s not currently clear how soon
construction might begin, but the decision means the loss of the Dunsfold
Business Park that includes over 100 businesses that employ 800 people,
according to BBC News.
“This is a very positive decision for Waverley – the development of
Dunsfold Aerodrome will provide homes for young families currently priced
out of the area, direct development away from green fields, create new
jobs and deliver a range of new community facilities and infrastructure
improvements,” Dunsfold Park Chief Executive Jim McAllister said in a
statement. “We look forward to working with Waverley Borough Council to
progress the detail.”
While this construction will mean the end of the Top Gear Test Track, the
show will still go on. Matt LeBlanc already has a contract to be the lead
host for two more seasons of the program. Depending on how quickly
production can begin, there might be enough time for The Stig to flog a
few more supercars around the roughly 1.75-mile (2.82 km) course. If not,
then the McLaren 675LT would be the production car record holder with a
lap of 1:13.7.
There are no official statements yet about how Top Gear’s producers
intend to move forward. Even when the course goes away, people can still
lap it virtually in video games like in Forza Motorsport 4,5, and 6.
