- The infected did (or well, the alpha male did). Thats official.
The director confirmed it. There was also a story description
on the official (!) website where it was said that "Neville is
caught in a trap set by the infected".

- Well, every lifeform evolves constantly. Human is still evolving.
And therefor the infected are evolving too.
