前言:
這是梅莉史翠普在金球獎上獲得西席地密爾獎(Cecil B. DeMille Award,又稱金球獎終
身成就獎)時,所發表的演說。一開始覺得她好用心,特地記下這麼多演員的成長背景,
後來更是懾服於她對人道的關懷。
雖然整段演講都衝著川普而來(川普當選後媒體跟演藝圈的聲勢直落千丈,而帶有濃濃保
護主義的川普應該也不會太喜歡外來者),而川普也的確有權利生氣,但用自己的地位去
呼籲他人重視議題、總好過濫用自己的地位欺凌他人,或是當沉默的大多數來的好吧。
看完演講過了快一個禮拜後勁還是久久未息。晚上上家教拿來當教材後,上網查了一下似
乎比較多片段的翻譯,所以就試著全部翻完了。

press. But who are we? And, you know, what is Hollywood anyway? It's just a
bunch of people from other places.

I was born and raised and educated in the public schools of New Jersey. Viola
[Davis] was born in a sharecropper's cabin in South Carolina, and came up in
Central Falls, Rhode Island. Sarah Paulson was born in Florida, raised by a
single mom in Brooklyn. Sarah Jessica Parker was one of seven or eight kids
from Ohio. Amy Adams was born in Vicenza, Italy. Natalie Portman was born in
Jerusalem. Where are their birth certificates? And the beautiful Ruth Negga
was born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, raised in London, no, in Ireland, I do
believe. And she's here nominated for playing a small town girl from
Virginia. Ryan Gosling, like all the nicest people, is Canadian. And Dev
Patel was born in Kenya, raised in London, is here for playing an Indian
raised in Tasmania.

Hollywood is crawling with outsiders and foreigners. If you kick 'em all out,
you'll have nothing to watch but football and mixed martial arts, which are
not the arts. They gave me three seconds to say this. So, an actor's only
job, is to enter the lives of people who are different from us and let you
feel what that feels like. And there were many, many, many powerful
performances this year that did exactly that, breathtaking, passionate work.
好萊塢充滿了外來者和外國人。如果你把他們都趕走了,能看的節目就只剩下足球和混合

There was one performance this year that stunned me. It sank its hooks in my
heart. Not because it was good. There was nothing good about it. But it was
effective and it did its job. It made its intended audience laugh and show
their teeth. It was that moment when the person asking to sit in the most
respected seat in our country imitated a disabled reporter, someone he
outranked in privilege, power, and the capacity to fight back. It kind of
broke my heart when I saw it. I still can't get it out of my head because it
wasn't in a movie. It was real life.
今年有個表演嚇到我了,並狠狠地刺進了我的心底。並不是因為那是一個好的表演,它並
沒有任何可取之處。但它的確效果卓越,並且成功達到了目的—它成功地讓目標觀眾笑出

And this instinct to humiliate, when it's modeled by someone in the public
platform, by someone powerful, it filters down into everybody's life, because
it kind of gives permission for other people to do the same thing. Disrespect
invites disrespect. Violence incites violence. When the powerful use their
position to bully others, we all lose.
當羞辱他人的劣根性,一旦經由有權有勢的人在公開平台裡做出壞榜樣,就滲入到每個人
的生活裡了,這就好像告訴其他人說,這樣做是被允許的。蔑視招來更多蔑視、暴力煽動
更多暴力。一旦有權者用一己地位去霸凌他人,我們都輸了。
This brings me to the press. We need the principled press to hold power to
account, to call them on the carpet for every outrage. That's why our
founders enshrined the press and its freedoms in our constitution. So I only
ask the famously well-heeled Hollywood Foreign Press and all of us in our
community to join me in supporting the committee to protect journalists.
Because we're going to need them going forward. And they'll need us to
safeguard the truth.
這件事讓我想到了記者。我們需要有原則的記者,堅守自己的權力,去報導並加以譴責每

One more thing. Once when I was standing around on the set one day whining
about something, we were going to work through supper, or the long hours or
whatever, Tommy Lee Jones said to me, isn't it such a privilege, Meryl, just
to be an actor. Yeah, it is. And we have to remind each other of the
privilege and the responsibility of the act of empathy. We should all be very
proud of the work Hollywood honors here tonight.
