The Chicago Cubs today named Triple-A Iowa outfielder Jorge Soler and
Single-A Kane County right-handed pitcher Jen-Ho Tseng the organization's
minor league player and pitcher of the month for July, respectively.
Tseng, 19, went 3-1 with a 1.47 ERA (5 ER/30.2 IP) in five July games (four
starts) for Kane County. He walked just four and struck out 20 while he held
the opponent to a .137 batting average and recorded a 0.59 WHIP, both the
best marks in the Midwest League. His 1.47 ERA ranked fifth in the league. On
July 13 vs. Beloit, Tseng threw a 7.0-inning complete game, allowing one run
on three hits while striking out seven in a 3-1 victory.
In his first pro season since he was signed as a non-drafted free agent by
Chicago, July 25 of last year, Tseng is 6-1 with a 2.56 ERA (23 ER/81.0 IP)
in 15 games (14 starts) for Kane County. He has struck out 71 hitters
compared to just 11 walks, and held the opponent to a .221 batting average
(65-for-294). Tseng has walked two or fewer in 13 of his 14 starts, and has
recorded nine outings without issuing a free pass.
