Nemanja Matic has been at Chelsea long enough to know there are always
repercussions if you upset Jose Mourinho.
The images of the manager exploding with rage as two members of Chelsea's
medical department ran onto the pitch to treat Eden Hazard last Saturday
showed what an intimidating sight it can be.
No one could have predicted the extent of the controversy that followed,
which has overshadowed the club's preparations for their crucial game at
Manchester City on Sunday.
As a key member of Chelsea's first team since rejoining the club from
Benfica in January 2014 for £25million, Matic has seen Mourinho voice his
displeasure on many occasions when the players have not met his high
standards.
After opening the campaign with a disappointing 2-2 draw at home to
Swansea on Saturday, he expected to be on the receiving end again.
Instead, what took place in the dressing room afterwards was far more
uncomfortable.
Such is Matic's admiration for the man in charge, he is thinking of going
into coaching when his playing career comes to an end.
He has already had a taste of taking on, and beating, a Mourinho team as
part of their roles to promote the management game Top Eleven (right).
Yet, the midfielder would like to do it for real one day.
Surprisingly, Chelsea's ability to do the same has come under question
following their opening 2-2 draw with Swansea.
After winning the Premier League title with relative ease last term, there
has been little investment in the squad, with only two senior signings,
Asmir Begovic and Radamel Falcao, arriving at Stamford Bridge so far.
Their closest challengers, including Manchester City, Manchester United,
Liverpool and Tottenham, have spent over £250m between them on new
players to close the gap.
Despite this, former Liverpool captain Jamie Carragher claimed last week
that none of these signings would get into Chelsea's first team and that
the defending champions were still the side to beat.
