David Luiz cherishes FA Cup losers' medal as it reminds Chelsea to 'learn
from Arsenal loss'
Simon Johnson - 2 days ago
For most players, losing an FA Cup Final and the chance to win the Double
would be a day to forget. That is not the case for Chelsea defender David
Luiz.
Saturday marks eight weeks since Arsenal ended Chelsea's title-winning
season on a sour note by securing a 2-1 triumph at Wembley.
The scenes at the final whistle could not have been more different from
those Luiz had enjoyed at Stamford Bridge the Sunday before, when he got
his hands on the Premier League trophy for the first time.
Chelsea had been outplayed in the Final by their London rivals, who they
meet in a friendly at the Bird's Nest here in Beijing tomorrow, and had to
watch them celebrate a deserved victory.
Few elite players cherish a runners-up medal in their collection, but
Brazil international Luiz has put it alongside all the winners' medals he
has accumulated.
As I sit down with Luiz to discuss his hopes for the coming campaign, a
look of bemusement crosses his face when I ask him to explain why he
should want to keep what, for many, serves only as a painful reminder of
an opportunity lost.
“I keep my medal because many teams didn't arrive in the Final,” he
says. “So we were behind only one team, although we need to learn from
this game. We didn't play a good match, not at our high level, but we need
to see what we did before that, to arrive there. So, it depends on your
view in life.
“It was a day to learn from but also a day to be proud and say we did a
great season. We talk about the results but when you are inside football
as a player you need to see everything if you want to improve.”
Chelsea's ability to successfully defend their League crown this coming
season has been the subject of debate among their fanbase over the past
few months. The dismal campaign of 2015/16, when they finished 10th —
their lowest position for 20 years — a year after dominating the top
flight is still on people's minds.
A lack of signings early in the summer transfer window, combined with
speculation over coach Antonio Conte's future, sparked a feeling of deja
vu in some quarters.
Things, though, are looking up. Conte has agreed a new two-year deal,
while the club are set to add Alvaro Morata to the signings of Willy
Caballero, Antonio Rudiger and Tiemoue Bakayoko.
Luiz is one of the few players in the dressing room who knows what it
takes to retain a championship, having done so with Paris St-Germain
between 2014-16. As far as the 30-year-old is concerned, PSG's recipe for
success is one Chelsea should follow.
“In the second season at PSG, we won [the title] by 31 points,” says
Luiz. “We did a fantastic preparation for the season. We learned from the
previous one, when we didn't play well until January or February, then we
sprinted to win the league.
“In the next season, we started fantastic and I think we killed our
opponents in their minds. In the first 15 games we were winning, winning,
winning and they were saying, 'This season will be impossible'. After that
we managed to continue to play well. We had a great team there — great
players and a great mentality. I hope Chelsea can make a good start like
that, too. Every year is a new year. But when you show you are strong, the
others can say this is not going to be easy. It is a natural feeling.”
Even with the new signings, Chelsea's squad is still looking a little
thin, with the first game of the new season, against Burnley, only 22 days
away.
Diego Costa and Nemanja Matic are discussing moves away, while Bakayoko
and Eden Hazard are set to miss the first few matches with knee and ankle
injuries respectively.
Conte complained that he had a small group of senior players to choose
from compared to his rivals last season and Chelsea's squad will be put
under more strain in 2017/18 with their return the Champions League. Luiz
sees no cause for alarm, though.
“Let's wait for the end of the window,” he says. “Every team can make
signings on the last day. It depends if the managers wants more players...
it depends on the club... it depends on many things.
“As for [being without] Eden, I trust the others. Willian and Pedro are
top players. We are lucky. All the players here are top quality, but
obviously I hope Eden will recover quickly because he's top class. The
fans should not be worried because we have a great team and we're going to
fight for them.”
