其實是從 Auckland（奧克蘭）遷移過來的。

1865年，Wellington（威靈頓）成為新的紐西蘭首都，代替原先由 William Hobson
在 1841 確立的首都 Auckland（奧克蘭）。紐西蘭議會於 1862 年 7 月 7 日
首次在此暫定的基礎上於威靈頓召開會議；在 1863 年 11 月，紐西蘭總理
Alfred Domett 在奧克蘭向議會提出了某一決議
「......政府所在地......應該移轉到庫克海峽某些適當的區域」。
顯然有些擔心人口多的南島（同時是金礦所在地）將選擇在大英帝國內，
形成一個單獨的殖民地。那些被邀請且來自澳大利亞的幾名地位中立的專員，
宣布威靈頓是一個合適的地點，因為它在紐西蘭的中心位置，且同時擁有良港。
議會於 1865 年 7 月 26 日第一次在威靈頓正式舉行會議。
當時，威靈頓的人口只有 4,900 人（2013 年 6 月為 397,900 人）。
In 1865, Wellington became the capital city in place of Auckland,
which William Hobson had made the capital in 1841. The New Zealand
Parliament had first met in Wellington on 7 July 1862, on a temporary basis;
in November 1863, the Prime Minister of New Zealand, Alfred Domett,
placed a resolution before Parliament in Auckland that
"... it has become necessary that the seat of government ...
should be transferred to some suitable locality in Cook Strait."
Apparently, there had been some concerns that the more populous
South Island (where the goldfields were located) would choose to
form a separate colony in the British Empire. Several Commissioners
invited from Australia, chosen for their neutral status,
declared that Wellington was a suitable location because of
its central location in New Zealand and good harbour.
Parliament officially met in Wellington for the first time on 26 July 1865.
At that time, the population of Wellington was just 4,900.
