Why Will China Be Happy to See Steve Bannon Leave the White House?

On August 18, the White House announced that Stephen K. Bannon, U.S Presiden
t Donald Trump’s chief political strategist, is leaving his post. Two days
earlier, Bannon’s remarks that the U.S. is “at economic war with China” h
ad led to backlash in China.
On August 16, The American Prospect published an exclusive, wide-ranging int
erview with Bannon. In the interview, Bannon repeatedly mentioned China and
claimed that the U.S. should take a harder line with Beijing. Some of his re
marks about China were particularly sensational:
We’re at economic war with China. It’s in all their literature. They’re n
ot shy about saying what they’re doing. One of us is going to be a hegemon
in 25 or 30 years and it’s gonna be them if we go down this path… To me, t
he economic war with China is everything. And we have to be maniacally focus
ed on that. If we continue to lose it, we’re five years away, I think, ten
years at the most, of hitting an inflection point from which we’ll never be
able to recover.

Bannon described “his battle” inside the Trump administration “to take a
harder line on China trade.” He didn’t mention in what literature China ta
lks about economic war with the United States.
Unsurprisingly, Bannon’s remarks immediately caught China’s attention and
led to backlash.
On August 17, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying made a leng
thy comment in which the “relevant person” alluded to was most certainly B
annon:
I would like to stress that, just as the Chinese side stated many times, the
economic relations and trade between China and the US are mutually benefici
al in essence. In fact, the long-term economic and trade cooperation between
the China and the US have brought tangible benefits to the two peoples, whi
ch is an undeniable fact in the eyes of any unbiased person. A trade war doe
s not serve the interests of any party, as fighting a trade war will not pro
duce a winner. We hope that the relevant persons can stop perceive an issue
of the 21 century with the zero-sum mentality of the 19th or 20th century.
Now — one day after Hua’s reply — Bannon has been fired from his position
. Although Bannon certainly didn’t lose his post because of his aggression
toward China, China is for sure among those who sincerely welcome the exit.

毫不意外地，班農的談話很快被北京方面注意到並強烈譴責。
8月17日，中國大陸外交部發言人華春瑩對此作出評論，她用相關人仕來暗指班農：
“我們再三強調，中美之間的貿易和經濟往來是互惠互利的。實際上，兩國長久以來的
經濟往來讓兩國人民都受益良多，任何沒有偏見的人都會非常清楚地看到這一事實。貿
易戰沒有前途，不符合任何一方利益，打貿易戰沒有贏家。我們希望有關人仕不要以19
世紀、20世紀的零和思維看待或試圖解決21世紀的問題。”
華春瑩說這些話一天之後，班農被裁掉了。盡管班農並不是因為對中國大陸的攻擊性言
論而丟掉工作，但中國大陸方面一定非常歡迎這個結果。
