Philippine press: President Aquino should apologize to Taiwan
The Philippine press continues to provide coverage of the recent shooting
attack on the ROC fishing boat Guang Da Xing No. 28 by a Philippine
government vessel. A commentary in the Business Mirror pointed out that
President Benigno S. Aquino III “should formally apologize to the government
of Taiwan” and that the Philippines should demonstrate its resolve to
uncover the truth. The Philippine Daily Inquirer, which recently sent a
journalist to Taiwan, reported that the people of Taiwan have shown “they
care about Filipinos.”
On May 26, the Business Mirror published a commentary by former congressman
Teddy Locsin, Jr., headlined “What is to be done with Taiwan.” Mr. Locsin
wrote that “the President should formally apologize to the government of
Taiwan for our military killing of a Taiwanese civilian, regardless of the
circumstances.” He also pointed out that, over the years, “Taiwan stayed a
friend, enhanced trade ties, and became a real democracy before we did.”
Furthermore, he noted that “Taiwan is a real state, with the defining
features of a real state.”
In a May 26 column titled “Making and keeping friends,” the Philippine
Daily Inquirer observed that a Taiwan fisherman had died and suggested that
the Philippines should be “offering our deepest sympathies to the family and
showing our resolve to determine the circumstances behind the encounter and
ensure justice is done and proper accountability is meted out.” It also
pointed out that “the Philippines and Taiwan have had decades of good
relations,” adding that “we need all the friends we have made in the world,
and keeping them is important.” The Philippine Daily Inquirer also published
a news report from Taiwan on May 27, titled “Now, Taiwanese show they care
about Filipinos.” According to the report, “Fr. Leonilo Mantilla, St.
Christopher parish priest, said the situation had improved and no more
attacks on Filipinos were reported in recent days.”
In addition, The Philippine Star, The Daily Tribune and the People’s Daily
published four letters to the editor from the Taipei Economic and Cultural
Office (TECO) in the Philippines, entitled “Taiwan is a committed friend to
the Philippines,” “Hope for harmonious end,” “Taiwan reiterates
commitment to peace I” and “Taiwan reiterates commitment to peace II.”
These letters reiterated that the humanitarian aid Taiwan provides to the
Philippines would not be discontinued, and guaranteed that the rights and
safety of Filipino labors in Taiwan would be protected. They also called on
the Philippines to cooperate closely with the ROC government and seek a
peaceful resolution to the dispute, “based on the principle of sincerity,
mutual respect and reciprocity.”
The three most influential Filipino community newspapers in southern
California—the Asian Journal, Balita Media and the California Journal for
Filipino Americans—also published a letter from TECO in Los Angeles on May
25, stressing that the ROC government had urged its people to treat Filipinos
working in Taiwan kindly and to continue providing “a friendly and safe
environment for them.” It was also hoped that the letter would enable
Philippine nationals, both in the US and at home, to understand the truth
behind the incident, as well as highlight the ROC government’s efforts to
protect Filipinos living in Taiwan
