摘要
Sociophonetics is a growing research area nestled at the intersection of
acoustic phonetics and variationist sociolinguistics. Recognizing that
variation is a pervasive property of human language, sociophonetic researchers
use acoustic, computational, and statistical tools to measure fine-grained
subphonemic variation and determine what factors influence this variation.
Common social factors examined in sociophonetics include age, gender, region,
social class, ethnicity, formality, interlocutor/audience, etc., and common
linguistic factors include preceding and following phonetic environment,
location in utterance, etc. Many sociophonetic researchers focus on vowels and
consonants, but less-commonly studied variables like lexical tone are
important to study as well. Recent work in "sociotonetics" focuses on this
underrepresented topic in sociophonetics.
