innings anyway and got the win Thursday, staving off elimination and keeping
the Phillies’ season alive for at least two more days.

But now the question turns to this: Can Halladay get healthy again in time
for another start — potentially in the opener of the World Series?

Halladay said the injury caused him to change his mechanics and shorten his
stride Thursday. He said it didn’t effect his stuff.

“We pitched the same,” Halladay said. “It’s mechanically more than
anything, just trying to not overdo it. We had the same game plan. I just had
to find a different way to get it there.”

That wasn’t entirely true said pitching coach Rich Dubee.

“He couldn’t command (his fastball),” Dubee said. “His fastball, when he
tried to get extended, he’d come off his backside and he made two mistakes
to Cody and Burrell and in that one inning and they scored that second run.
He just wasn’t able to get the extension to keep the ball down.”

The velocity was off on his cutter, too, and the Giants managed to lay off
his curve ball throughout.

And as admirable as that was, the Phillies would probably like to see him
with his A+ stuff in his next start, which hopefully will be in the World
Series and not next April.

So, how’s the health, really?
“The second inning, kind of in the middle of the Cody Ross at-bat, (the
pain) was sharp at that point,” Halladay said. “After that, I tried to
shorten up. It never got any worse. It just stayed the same, and it was
something I felt like I could pitch with.”

In June of last year, Halladay suffered a similar injury. That was something
he couldn’t pitch with.

Halladay left that start after just three innings and he didn’t take the
mound again for two weeks. That would be an unfortunate way for him to end
his first career postseason if this injury turns out to be as serious, but
Halladay doesn’t think it will.

“I think it was a lot worse then,” he said. “That one I think was a lot
different, a lot more serious than the one today. We didn’t overdo it and it
’s hopefully something I can take care of before we hopefully move forward.”

We’ll likely get a more complete update Friday. In the meantime, some more
appreciation for how much he gave the Phillies on Thursday…
Halladay on his outing: “You’ll definitely take it. All year, we’ve never
had heroes. We’ve been a very good, solid, all-around team. That’s what we
need to continue doing. Bullpen came in and did a great job, we scored some
tough runs and we did a lot of little things.”
