Beane’s real plan, of course, was that the 6-foot-3, 212-pound
left-handed-hitting first baseman would become a slugger in the middle of the
A’s batting order, based on his hitting at the University of Virginia, where
he set a program record for runs batted in.
Sean Doolittle
Beane
That was all before Doolittle, 26, lost nearly full three seasons, 2009 to
2011, because of operations on both knees. Then, three days from his
scheduled return to Class AAA Sacramento, he injured a tendon in his right
(nonthrowing) wrist, and was told that he might have to miss another year. It
was enough to make him consider the possibility of leaving the A’s,
returning to college to complete his degree and entering the working world.
Instead, Doolittle headed for the mound. The fanciful backup plan was no
longer a gag.
Doolittle
“Ultimately, I wanted to leave no stone unturned, to be able to look back
with no regrets,” Doolittle said Tuesday night. “If pitching didn’t work
out, then at least I could say that I tried everything I could to extend my
baseball career.”
He made it to the mound in time to pitch one inning in the Arizona Rookie
League last season, then started this year at Class A Stockton. Six games
later, he was promoted to Class AA Midland. Eight games after that, he found
himself in Sacramento ... for all of two games.
Doolittle’s total minor league line before the A’s called him up in June:
17 games, 26 innings, 1.04 earned run average, 50 strikeouts, 8 walks. Amount
of time that he had been a professional pitcher: about nine months.
On Tuesday, Beane’s backup plan threw 12 pitches to Tigers hitters, all of
them four-seam fastballs from 94 to 96 miles per hour, and collected three
strikeouts, all swinging.
Doolittle’s bullpen mate and fellow left-hander Travis Blackley said: “It’
s not news to anyone how good his arm is. At this level, a young pitcher
might be inclined to try to miss bats, but Sean just fires it in there as
hard as he can, telling hitters to go get it — but they can’t.”
“I never thought that pitching would get me to the big leagues,” Doolittle
said. “I just wanted to keep playing, and this was the only way I could
think of. Reaching the big leagues was the farthest thing from my mind.”
No longer. A year ago, Doolittle was a broken-down hitter contemplating
retirement. Now he’s dominating the opposition on the game’s biggest stage.
A Plan B has never looked so good.
