The Mets have signed veteran reliever Jose Valverde to a minor-league contract,
reports CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman. Heyman adds that Valverde's contract will
be for $1 million if Valverde makes the Mets' roster.
Valverde, age 35, is coming off a 2013 season in which he posted a 5.59 ERA
(76 ERA+) and 3.17 K/BB ratio in 19 1/3 innings for the Tigers. For his career,
Valverde owns an ERA+ of 138 across parts of 11 major-league seasons. In 2011,
he pitched to a 2.24 ERA, saved 49 games for the Tigers and finished fifth in
the AL Cy Young balloting. However, declining velocity has coincided with a
loss of effectiveness.
It's a minor-league deal, of course, so the risk is quite limited. However,
it's hard to imagine that Valverde has much to offer at this stage of his
career.
