Free-agent slugger Nelson Cruz turned out to be the biggest free-agent
bargain in baseball when he hit an MLB-high 40 home runs after signing a
one-year, $8 million deal with the Orioles. Now word is, Cruz is very much
hoping not to be that sort of bargain again.
Cruz is seeking a four-year deal at big bucks, according to league sources.
The Orioles, the beneficiary of that great deal last spring, were said to
have signalled in talks with Cruz a willingness to give Cruz at least a
two-year deal at a big raise in addition to extending the $15.3 million
qualifying offer for 2015. However, there's no indication they are ready to
do a four-year deal with the 34-year-old slugger, so it appears Cruz will
have to shop around.
The Orioles, meanwhile, are in talks to try to bring back longtime Orioles
outfielder Nick Markakis, talks that were said a few days ago to be
"progressing." MASN reported the sides were discussing a four-year deal in
that case.
With Cruz not appearing to be anything close to a quick signing for them,
Markakis perhaps becomes a bit more important for the Orioles, who helped
themselves by locking up shortstop J.J. Hardy to a $29 million, three-year
deal last month.
Cruz suffered last winter due to the attachment of the draft choice following
his decision to reject the qualifying offer from Texas, plus also the
Biogenesis stain, and perhaps to a lesser degree, his age. But it certainly
isn't a shock he's trying to make up for his $8 million 2014 salary after he
was the only player in the majors to hit 40 home runs and collected 108 RBI,
both career highs. Now that he is a year removed from the drug stain, the
draft choice attachment and his age may be the bigger issues as he hits free
agency again.

但他的年紀（34歲）和需要丟掉選秀權之因素仍或多或少會影響其他球隊出手的意願
