1. In this semester we have discussed various distinctive characteristics of
information that separate it from other goods or resources. What are these
traits of information that make it so special? When making the list, give also
your thoughts on how these traits might impact the fundamental concern of
information science, that is, the mediation between human and information. (40
points)
2. If the frequency with which an event varies as a power of some attribute of
that event (for example, its magnitude or popularity), the frequency distribu-
tion is said to follow a power law. It has been shown that the circulation of
books and the sales of other cultural products often follow power laws.
According to Chris Anderson, what are the three conditions of the power law
phenomenon in the sale of cultural products? (20 points)
3. Chris Anderson argued that people's consumption of information will become
more diverse with more choices now being made available online. Is availabi-
lity the only factor in determining the diversity of our information consump-
tion? Discuss how you agree or disagree with him. To answer this question,list
all the social, cognitive, or technological mechanisms that you can think of
that might contribute to the narrowing or broadening of the diversity of one's
information consumption. (30 points)
Answer ONE of the following two questions.
4. Define "cognitive authority". What are the possible cues we as information
seekers can use to infer the "cognitive authority" of a piece of information?
How do search engines automatically evaluate the authority of a website? (10
points)
5. What does David Weinberger mean by "three-orders of order" in information
organization? How has digitalization changed the ways we access information?
Focus specifically on what new browsing experiences in the digital environment
can now be afforded by faceted classification not previously available in
physical environment. (10 points)
