Pre-Match Briefings, it is time for club historian Rick Glanvill and club
statistician Paul Dutton to take a look back…

The 2017/18 season, the Blues' 83rd in the top flight and 102nd overall
since 1905, drew to a close with the club's 13th FA Cup final, and the
14th cup final under Roman Abramovich's ownership.

The Wembley final victory was the Blues' second against Manchester United,

The FA Cup final was the club's 21st visit to the new Wembley, and 13th
victory there. When Eden Hazard sent David De Gea the wrong way he became
the first person to score the only goal in an FA Cup final from the
penalty spot since Huddersfield Town beat Preston North End on 29 April
1922… at Stamford Bridge.

No penalty had been awarded in a final since one for Man United's Ruud van
Nistelrooy in 2004 against Millwall. The Blues, by the way, conceded just
two goals over the entire cup campaign.

Chelsea also became the first team in 16 years to win the competition

The FA Cup final TV audience peaked at 8.7m on the BBC. It was the last of
44 Chelsea games to be televised during the season – each of the last 19
was selected for viewing.
Meanwhile, Liverpool's 3-1 Champions League defeat in Kiev by Real Madrid
also means the Londoners remain the last club from England to scoop that
elite prize.
Reaching the final meant the Reds were the only English club to finish
with more Champions League prize money this season. As half of the TV pool
money is distributed on the basis of a club's position in the previous
season's domestic league, defending champions Chelsea reportedly earned
around €64m. Liverpool pocketed approximately €78m, Manchester City
around €62m, Spurs €60m and Manchester United €39m.
September's victory at Atletico Madrid meant Conte's side completed six
successive away victories in all competitions, equalling our best ever
sequence when playing in the top flight achieved in 2004/05 (twice),
2005/06, 2006/07 (twice) and 2012/13. The longest overall run of success
on the road remains the seven set in 1988/89 when the Blues were in
Division Two.

Next season brings the Europa League – the club's first venture in the
reconfigured competition from the start. There is always talk about the
big revenue divide between the two UEFA tournaments, but the 2016/17
Europa League winners, Manchester United, pocketed €44.5m from the
tournament, compared to just €13.8m handed over to Sevilla the previous
season.
On a less positive note this season, Chelsea became the first reigning
Premier League champions to concede three goals in the first game of their
title defence.

That loss to Burnley, coupled with the final day at Newcastle, meant
Chelsea began and ended a top-flight season with defeats for the first
time in 44 years. Back then, Brian Clough's Derby won 1-0 (goal from John
O'Hare) in August 1973, and Alan Hudson did the damage for Stoke against
his former club at the Bridge in April 1974.

Never in the club's history had the Blues previously managed three
successive goalless draws in all competitions, but January's FA Cup trip
to Norwich, the Carabao Cup first leg at home to Arsenal, and the home
league visit of Leicester all ended 0-0.

February then brought back-to-back three-goal margin Premier League
defeats (0-3 Bournemouth, 1-4 Watford) for the first time in 22 years.
Lionel Messi managed finally to score against the Blues after firing
blanks in eight previous meetings with Barcelona. Most difficult to
swallow was the first home defeat by London rivals Tottenham since 1990.

The promotion through the play-offs of Fulham will add to the London
derbies next season. The Cottagers have not won a west London derby
against Chelsea in 17 matches stretching back to 2006.

The positives were there in the various campaigns too. Chelsea visited
four new club stadiums for the first time in competitive action: the Wanda
Metropolitano in Madrid, Olympic Stadium in Baku, John Smith's Stadium in
Huddersfield and the Amex in Brighton, taking the total of venues played
at competitively since 1905 to 207. We won at every single one of the four
new grounds, scoring 13 times in the process. There was another notable
victory at Tottenham's first league outing at their temporary home,
Wembley.

The 3-1 win at Huddersfield meant Chelsea have won at 50 different
stadiums over the Premier League era. Brighton (4-0) made it 51.

Chelsea were at the heart of technological innovations this season too. We
became English football's most regular guinea pigs in the testing of the
Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system, aimed at reviewing and correcting
'clear and obvious' game-changing oversights by officials.

January's Carabao Cup semi-final first leg against Arsenal at the Bridge
became only the second game in English football to trial the system, and
the Blues were involved in six further VAR games up to and including the
FA Cup final.

Clubs voted to reject trialling the Hawk-Eye system during the 2018/19
Premier League season. There were one or two teething problems with the
testing this campaign, with questions raised about the length of time the
reviews took and communication to supporters.

season are released at 9am UK time on Thursday 14 June.
