Over 100 illegal Chinese offices in Taiwan found: official
Taipei, May 14 (CNA) The National Security Bureau (NSB, 國家安全局) has
discovered more than 100 offices that were illegally established by Chinese
companies or individuals in Taiwan, some 20 of which could cause national
security concerns, an NSB official said Thursday during a legislative session.
Asked about the bureau's role in a plan to establish representative offices
on each side of the Taiwan Strait, Lai Yun-cheng (賴蘊誠), the deputy chief
of the NSB's third department (第三處), which is in charge of the nation's
homeland security and intelligence work, said that the Mainland Affairs
Council (MAC, 大陸委員會) is responsible for mapping out the plan, while the
bureau is keeping tabs on any illegal or abnormal activities.
In response to a question about the bureau's criteria for defining
illegality, Lai said this is usually determined by checking whether the
operators are engaged in activities that are not included in their
applications and whether they have submitted applications to set up offices
in Taiwan. Not only Chinese-invested companies but also some Chinese think
tanks have set up offices in Taiwan without permits, according to Lai. (Chen
