我們總是為Miss Brill尋求解決方法：為什麼要否認自己的寂寞，為什麼不離開那些細碎
且徒勞的白日夢，為什麼無法與現實溝通，為什麼如此絕望卻又不敢去愛……如同一旦解
決，情況就會變好。然而Miss Brill目睹英國人的妻子與ermine toque所過的日子，它平
凡，庸俗，不堪到必須以幻想去遮掩，放棄白日夢後，她過的將是一樣的日子。
Baudelaire“Windows”敘述他看見窗外行經的一位中年婦女，虛構了關於她的傳說
(legend)，並因此哀嘆不已，末段寫到：“Perhaps you will say ‘Are you sure
that your story is the real one?’But what does it matter what reality is
outside myself, so long as it has helped me to live, to feel that I am, and
what I am?”Miss Brill與人群疏離，和Baudelaire的窗戶同樣出現“面紗(veil)”的作
用，藉由不再看見現實，他們得以繼續想像，得以為之快樂，悲傷，甚至墜入情網。
現實永遠不及白日夢斑斕美好，這層面紗不能被掀起，就如同Galatea不能活過來。Ovid
“Metamorphoses”中Cyprus的Pygmalion厭棄現實中的女性，而愛上自己所雕刻的
Galatea；他需要的是一個毫無反應、充滿narcissistic式自我投射的對象，使自己絕望
的愛情無限延長，以保持對“她”的興趣。Fur stole是Miss Brill的Galatea，她的投射
，她白日夢唯一的傾聽者，當她過度靠近現實，年輕的heroine掀開面紗，讓fur stole顯
露現實裡醜惡的面貌(“It’s exactly like a fried whiting.”)，Miss Brill欲維持自
我認同，只能轉移投射，遺棄已然活過來的，哭泣的fur stole(“When she put the lid
on she thought she heard something crying.”)。
