That’s fine.
Nothing wrong with trying to expand a young player’s game.

But Aminu’s play on Thursday against Utah was a reminder that you can only
go so far with trying to reinvent some players. Aminu was meant to be
patrolling the paint, rebounding and scoring closer to the basket rather than
farther away.
Aminu, who will be returning to New Orleans where he spent the last three
seasons for today’s game against the Pelicans (6pm tipoff), had 16 points
and 10 rebounds in less than 20 minutes of playing time against the Jazz.

That’s what Aminu does.
“The stuff around the basket, I can hang my hat on and do that night in and
night out,” Aminu said Friday. “The 3-point shot, when I’m open, you have
to shoot it. It would mess up the flow of the offense if you don’t. So I
just try to be confident with it.
“It (inside play) is what I’m known for. I’d like for my shot to be my
bread and butter as well.”

The interesting part about Aminu’s comment is that he has to shoot the
3-pointer if defenses don’t respect him. That’s why coach Rick Carlisle and
his staff have worked hard on it with the 6-9, 220-pound small forward.
Even though he’s a good rebounder and has a nose for the ball, which
invariably leads to some putback points on the offensive end, Carlisle wants
everybody on the team to be able to make a shot if left open. That includes
Aminu and even Tyson Chandler, if he gets lonely on the 3-point arc.

one of them.”

For Aminu, that means reading situations on the court. Much depends on who
shoots the ball. If it’s a jump shot, his job is to race to the rim and be
ready for an offensive rebound.
If it’s a guard driving to the basket, Carlisle said it becomes riskier for
Aminu to try to be a rebounder because the team is better served by him
racing back defensively to stop any potential fast break off a missed shot.
Aminu’s defense is another of his calling cards. The No. 8 overall pick of
the 2010 draft has never been afraid to work on that end of the floor,
something Tyson Chander – himself a gifted defender – noticed quickly.

“I’ve been singing his praises ever since he got here,” Chandler said. “
He got drafted into some situations where he didn’t find his groove in
organizations that didn’t quite have an identity yet. I think he’s a young
player that has a lot to give to this game.
“The first day I saw him, I told him he should go watch Scottie Pippen
(tape). He has the motor to stay after it.”

Aminu said he’s followed through, checking out video of Pippen, widely
considered one of the best wing defenders ever in the game. Aminu’s long
reach and similar body type give him a chance to do some of the things Pippen
could do defensively.
“I just watched the little things he did that made him a great defender,”
Aminu said. “The way he moved his feet and things like that.”
Aminu, 24, is still young enough that he has room to grow at both ends of the
floor. But for now, defense and rebounding remain the two things he does best.
