The Phoenix Suns engaged in advanced discussions to trade former No. 1
overall pick Deandre Ayton to the Dallas Mavericks last week during the NBA
Draft before the talks stalled, league sources say.
The proposed deal, sources tell The Stein Line, would have sent Ayton to
Dallas for Tim Hardaway Jr., Richaun Holmes and JaVale McGee — but the Suns
balked at McGee’s inclusion.

The talks with Dallas were not going to furnish Phoenix with any future
first-round draft compensation but initially held appeal to the Suns, sources
say, because it would have given them two players they like in Hardaway and
Holmes who could plug into a rotation with numerous vacancies in support of
the newly formed star trio of Kevin Durant, Devin Booker and Bradley Beal.
Hardaway and Holmes are also both under contract for just two more seasons
each at much more manageable (and movable) salaries compared to the three
years and $102 million left on Ayton's contract.

The problem for the Mavericks is that trading for a frontline center was
their foremost offseason priority beyond their plans to re-sign All-Star
guard Kyrie Irving. In hopes of finding a center who can anchor a defense,
Dallas engaged in advanced trade discussions with Atlanta leading up to the
draft in an attempt to acquire Clint Capela, but the sides could not agree on
a deal. The Hawks were adamant that the Mavericks accept John Collins instead
of Capela or add swingman Josh Green to the trade to cinch Capela’s
inclusion; Dallas balked at both asks and Atlanta went on to agree Monday to
trade Collins to the Utah Jazz.

Sources with knowledge of the Phoenix/Dallas trade discussions said a
resumption of the Ayton talks could not be ruled out.

Trading for Ayton would be a pricey gamble for Dallas, given the years and
millions left on the inconsistent big man's deal, but it's a gamble that the
Mavericks would ultimately be willing to take given their need for a center
and the relatively low cost to acquire the player chosen two picks ahead of
Luka Doncic at No. 1 overall in 2018.
