宗亦通、說亦通,定慧圓明不滯空。
The Chan School mastered, the Teaching School mastered as well;
Samadhi perfected, wisdom radiant, and not stuck in emptiness.
那麼為什麼他宗也通了,說也通了呢?就因為他「定慧圓明」了;定也具足了,慧也具足
了。定慧圓明是怎麼樣才能定慧圓明?就是從持戒那兒來的。所以修道的人要是不持戒律
,那就好像什麼呢?就好像很好吃的東西,可是你裏邊摻上狗糞了,人人都不但不願意吃
,而且還都掩鼻而過;也可以說好像煮沙欲其成飯一樣的。所以修道的人必須要注重戒律
;你不持戒律那是誤己誤人,那是騙己也騙人。騙己,自己不能定慧圓明;騙人,令人不
生信心。
How is it that he can master the Chan School as well as the Teaching School? I
t is because his samadhi has been perfected and his wisdom is now radiating; h
is samadhi and wisdom are both perfected. How was he able to have his samadhi
perfected and wisdom radiating? By upholding the precepts. What are cultivator
s like if they do not uphold the precepts? They are like delicious food with d
og’s excrement added. Not only would nobody want to eat that, but everyone w
ould cover their noses and hurriedly walk by. It is also like cooking sand and
wishing to turn it into rice. So, cultivators must pay special attention to p
recepts. If you do not uphold the precepts, you are just fooling yourself as w
ell as others; cheating yourself as well as others. Cheating yourself, you wil
l never have perfect samadhi and radiating wisdom. Cheating others, you’ll ma
ke them lose faith in the Dharma.
所以「定慧圓明」「不滯空」﹕滯空就是停留在空上了,停留在空理上,在那兒欲進不進
、欲退不退,這叫踟躕不前;往後也不是往後,就徘徊在歧路之間,那就滯空了。滯空,
就得到一點點的空理,在這兒不往前去進步了,停留在那空的理上,這叫滯空。
“Samadhi perfected, wisdom radiant, and not stuck in emptiness:” To be “stu
ck in emptiness” is to linger in emptiness, entrenching yourself in emptiness
, and stopping there, unable to advance or to retreat. That is called failing
to be decisive and lacking the courage to progress. You are not retreating, bu
t wandering about at a crossroad
