The Mariners have added infielders Francisco Martinez and Carlos Triunfel and
outfielder Chih-Hsien Chiang to their 40-man roster, the club announced on
Friday. The moves protect them from the Rule 5 Draft on Dec. 8, and they will
be in Major League camp in Spring Training.
Chiang, 23, was acquired on July 31 in the trade that sent pitcher Erik Bedard
to Boston. He spent the entire season in Double-A, between affiliates for the
Red Sox and Mariners. He played in 120 games and hit .302 with 79 runs scored,
44 doubles, four triples, 18 home runs and 86 RBIs. He was the Eastern
League's Player of the Year and Player of the Month for both June and July.
Martinez, 21, was another key acquisition for the Mariners this past summer.
He was one of four players acquired from the Tigers in a trade that sent
Doug Fister and David Pauley to Detroit on July 30. A member of the World team
in the All-Star Futures Game, the Venezuela native also spent the entire season
in Double-A and combined to hit .289 with 83 runs scored, 21 doubles,
seven triples, 10 home runs and 69 RBIs in 124 games for Erie and Jackson and
was rated the 16th-best prospect in the Southern League.
Triunfel, 21, hit .281 with 52 runs scored, 28 doubles, three triples,
six home runs and 45 RBIs in 130 games combined between Jackson and Triple-A
Tacoma in 2011. He hit .279 in 27 games at Tacoma
